The Cyrillic Small Letter E (э) is a lowercase character used primarily in Russian and Belarusian to represent the mid-front unrounded vowel. Unlike the Cyrillic “e” (which is often palatalized), “э” represents a “hard” E sound. It was integrated into Unicode version 1.1 and belongs to the Cyrillic block in the Basic Multilingual Plane.
