Named after the Roman dictator Julius Caesar (100 BCE – 44 BCE), the Caesar cipher is one of the earliest and simplest recorded encryption techniques in human military history. According to Roman biographer Suetonius in The Twelve Caesars, Caesar encrypted sensitive battle dispatches by replacing each Latin letter with the letter three positions ahead in the alphabet:

Encrypt(x) = (x + k) mod 26, Decrypt(y) = (y - k) mod 26
