The Arabic Letter Dad (ض) is a unique emphatic consonant. Historically, Arabic was often called the “Language of the Dad” (Lughat al-Dad) because this specific voiced alveolar lateral fricative sound was believed to be exclusive to Arabic. In modern standards, it is pronounced as a voiced alveolar stop.
