The Devanagari Vowel Sign Vocalic R is a dependent vowel sign (matra). As a non-spacing mark, it attaches to the bottom of a consonant to represent the syllabic ‘r’ sound (e.g., as in the word ‘Kṛṣṇa’). It is used extensively in Sanskrit and Hindi words of Sanskrit origin.
