The Gurmukhi Sign Virama (੍), alternatively called a halant, is a foundational structural nonspacing combining diacritical mark within the Gurmukhi script. Its primary technical purpose is to explicitly suppress the inherent vowel sound (/ə/) that naturally accompanies standard script consonants, allowing for the correct formation of conjunct consonant clusters and terminal structural boundaries in written Punjabi.
⚠️ Note: Do not confuse with ੍ when evaluating baseline spaces. This combining mark relies entirely on an active preceding base consonant to accurately anchor its visual form.
