The Latin Small Letter Ae (æ), also known as “ash,” is a ligature of ‘a’ and ‘e’. Historically used in Latin and Old English, it remains a distinct vowel in modern Danish, Norwegian, Faroese, and Icelandic. In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), it represents the near-open front unrounded vowel.
