The Cyrillic Small Letter Nje (њ) is a specialized character used in Serbian, Macedonian, and Montenegrin. It is a ligature of the Cyrillic letters ‘Н’ (En) and ‘Ь’ (Soft Sign), representing the palatal nasal phoneme /ɲ/ (similar to ‘ny’ in “canyon”). It was introduced in the 19th century as part of Vuk Karadžić’s alphabet reform.
⚠️ Note: Do not confuse with the sequence of two characters нь (En + Soft Sign).
